It has been a whirlwind of a short half term characterised by snow, rain and wind outside and lots of learning inside the building. Spring term is usually one of our most productive terms, with the children well settled in their classes, and this first half term has been no exception.

On Tuesday, we joined the rest of the country in celebrating Safer Internet Day with a shared assembly and different activities in class to support the children safely navigating the ever-changing landscape of the our online world. If you have any concerns or questions about internet safety, please contact school as we acess to a wealth of guidance to support different aspects of online safety.

Canute class went to visit one of the the local shops to find out more about which skills and knowledge is needed to run a shop. The enjoyed finding out how their maths skills are useful outside the classroom and on their return to class, set about creating jam sandwiches with their bought ingredients.

For Tregeagle class, swimming starts again on Wednesday 21st February. Mrs Hughes has sent out reminders about kit, timings and logistics today. Please make sure you let us know if you need support with this.

We will be holding Parent Consultations in the week commencing 26th February, boking forms will be sent home in the week after half term. We are continuing with face to face meetings so you have the chance to se your child’s work in discussion with their teacher.

After half term, it will be Canute’s turn to work with our Mental Health Practitioner o learn all about managing emotions and feelings through the Decider Skills. This will help develop a shared language to use across the school for children and staff to support strategies for managing “The Fizz”.

A huge THANK YOU to Christine for filling our planters with colourful plants which make us all smile whenever we round the corner.

We finished half term with a visit from Reverend Richard, who taught us how to make pancakes for Pancake day and the significance of Shrove Tuesday in the Christian calendar.

Achievement Assembly
Writer of the Week:
Tegan for accepting the challenge to write with Liam and producing some fantastic work to show her understanding of the power of words.
Robbie for taking time and care using all the learning in her independent writing.

Stars of the Week:
Ailla for showing responsibility in her interactions with peers
Indi for taking responsibility and showing great independence

I hope you all have a welcome break and we look forward to welcoming the children back to school on Monday 19th February at 8:45am.

A great week of fun and learning in Canute class.

On Tuesday the children had a wonderful day at the Box museum in Plymouth with Mrs Fernie and Mrs Chasey, the exhibits answered many questions that we have been looking at in our History sessions Did Dinosaurs really exist ? . Through the fossils found in caves sites around Devon they were able to discover more about the creatures that inhabited the South West and of course the woolly mammoth exhibit was a particular highlight!

On Wednesday we had a special visit from Fowey Harbour Master Captain Paul Thomas. Captain Thomas gave the children are outline of what his job entailed and how to keep save on and in the water.  The children listened attentively and asked the Captain some fantastic questions about the day to day aspects of his job and how he became a Harbour Master.

Back in the classroom Canute have been exploring the life of  Mary Anning, born in 1799. This weeks question was why was Mary Anning famous ? The children have really enjoyed researching her life and concluded that although she came from humble beginnings she became one of the most famous female fossil hunters.  They have made their own fossils from salt dough and the excitement continues as we have dug out three more fossils from our own fossil dig, our pre-school children have particularly enjoyed these activities.

In maths Yr R have started looking at the composition of the numbers 6,7,8, Yr 1 have been looking at their number bonds to 20 and Yr 2 have been continuing looking at money using the language of greater than and less than.
In English Yr R have started a new book "Where the wild things are" and have enjoyed re-telling the story using stick figures of the characters. Yr  1 & 2 have started the book The Crows Tale, and have been writing their own dramatic story openers.
The children have worked really hard this week, we hope you all have a lovely  & restful  weekend.
From the Canute Class Team

Friday 26th January

We hope this blog post finds you well! Last week was nothing short of spectacular here in Canute Class. Laughter, learning, and creativity filled our classroom, making it a truly happy week for everyone. Let's take a closer look at some of the exciting activities that took place across different year groups.

Maths
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), our little mathematicians dived into the world of capacity. From pouring water into different containers to exploring the concept of "full" and "empty," our EYFS students had a blast while developing their understanding of this important mathematical concept. Meanwhile, Year 1 students put the finishing touches on their place value journey, reaching the milestone of understanding numbers up to 20. Through engaging activities and games, they solidified their grasp of units, tens, and the importance of each digit in a number. Over in Year 2, the focus was on money matters. Our Year 2 students delved into the world of currency, learning about different coins, their values, and how to make simple transactions. The practical and hands-on approach to teaching money management left our students excited and confident in their newfound skills.

English
In the realm of English, the children took a journey back in time to the era of the Great Fire of London. Each child crafted a fantastic diary entry, vividly describing the events of that historical period. The creativity and attention to detail displayed in their writing showcased the incredible progress our students have made in honing their English language skills.

Art
Art was a true delight as we continued our exploration of sculpture. This time, our young artists brought nature into the classroom by creating stunning tree sculptures through the manipulation of paper. The tactile experience of shaping and molding paper allowed our students to express their creativity while developing their fine motor skills.

The week was

a harmonious blend of academic growth and artistic expression, leaving us with smiles and a sense of accomplishment. We're proud of our students for their enthusiasm, dedication, and the positive energy they brought into every lesson. As we look forward to the weeks ahead, we're excited about our trip to the box museum next week with our special visitor!

We hope you have had a restful weekend. Mrs Fernie, Mrs Westacott, Miss Taylor and Miss Talbot.

Friday 19th January

We have had a truly magical week in Canute Class this week because on Thursday we were transported to Arabia! where we enjoyed the amazing musical "Aladdin"! The children were absolutely spellbound, such a fantastic show and such fantastic behavior from all pupils, several members of the general public at the show commented on what wonderfully behaved children we had ! We also managed some super learning this week.

Maths - Yr 2 have been focusing on money, they have enjoyed using different combinations to coins to create the same value, yr 1 have been looking at the numbers 1 to 20 on a number line, practicing estimating and finding one more and one less on the line. Reception have been consolidating their knowledge of the numbers 1 to 5 in Alive in Five!

English - Reception children have been continuing with the Jack and the Bean stalk story describing the beanstalk and how Jack climbed it. Year 1 and 2 have finished their Great Fire of London diary entries, they have edited their first draft to really improve their choice of adjectives and verbs and check for any grammar mistakes. They are now ready to write up the final piece next week.

History - we discussed the question How do we know dinosaurs existed ? We discussed bones & fossils and they got to be paleontologists themselves with their own fossil dig! They have so far unearthed an insect in amber ! and will continue to search for more fossils over the coming weeks.

RE - We have been looking at the different ways Christians show their love for God and the children very sweetly shared how they share their love for their families, lots of hugs! T

The children had a brilliant music lesson with Mrs Butlin where everyone played their own xylophone. In outdoor play our Pre-schoolers particularly enjoyed digging up dinosaur bones in the sand pit and everyone seems to have embraced the frosty weather this week which encapsulated our dinosaurs in ice! Much fun was had chipping the ice away to release them.

We hope the children really enjoyed their special trip to The Theatre Royal kindly paid for by the Polruan Regatta Committee, it was a really special afternoon.

Have a lovely weekend From the Canute Class Team

Performances

The building is bursting with learning and it is a real pleasure to see how the children are embracing this with enthusiasm and positive attitudes. We are fortunate enough to have the excellent Mrs Butlin back with us for this term and the children are absolutely delighted with learning how to read musical notation to play glockenspiels. It makes for a bustling afternoon with excitement, dedication and noise, which cannot always be classed as musical, however all children are learning new skills, applying prior knowledge and they are thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to play an instrument.

Theatre Trip
On Thursday we had our trip to watch Aladdin the Musical at Theatre Royal in Plymouth courtesy of the Regatta Committee. What a performance this was! The children were transfixed. They were bowled over with the acting, singing, dancing, staging and the fantastic special effects, we are still pondering how the carpet was able to fly. For many of the children this was their first visit to the theatre, but probably not the last as they could not believe that this was real time and not a recorded film. Aside from the obvious links with music and preparing Christmas plays and performances, many of the children were inspired by how their learning in DT links with jobs in a theatre.

A HUGE THANK YOU to the Regatta Committee members who organised the trip and joined us for a very memorable experience. We looked up the stats on the show worldwide and the children are delighted to know that they are now part of the 15 million world wide audience - a lovely connection with the wider world.

Enjoy the weekend,
Jane Wills

January 2024

It has been a busy return to school following the Christmas break with lots of exciting learning opportunities for all the children.

Theatre trip

You should all have received your letter regarding the whole school trip to the theatre courtesy of the Regatta Committee on Thursday 18th January. This promises to be a super afternoon giving the children the opportunity to enjoy music and acting first hand. Please ensure you have completed the consent form and returned these to school by Monday 15th. You will need to make arrangements to collect your child from the carpark at the top of the village as the coach cannot drive down to the school. We anticipate the return to be at 6pm. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs Hughes.

Parent Pay

We seem to have an increasing number of children whose lunches have NOT been ordered on Parent Pay. The system was set up to help the kitchen become more efficient with food ordering and make the start of the day easier in the classrooms. This is relevant for children paying and who receive Free School Meals. If you have forgotten how to order please see the document sent in today's email.

Attendance

Our whole school attendance is currently 95.2% which is slightly above National. This is a positive start to the new year and we would like this trend to continue. From the leaflet we sent home before Christmas, you will be aware of our expectations for attendance and how attendance is directly linked to academic achievements. Please continue to refer to the guides provided to support your decision making regarding any absences and always contact the school if you are in doubt whether to send your child to school or not.

Early finish
We are proposing a change to the timings on the last day of term. From spring term, the final day of term will end at 1:30pm. So this term will end on Thursday 28th March at 1:30pm. The early finish time only applies to the final day of term, not half termly. Final day of this half term is Thursday 8th Febrary as Friday 9th is a teacher training day. We return to school following the half term break on Monday 19th February.

Spring term promises to be a busy, interesting term bursting with learning experiences. Please make sure you stay updated by checking your emails and logging in to the school website for class blogs and updates.

Kindest regards,
Jane Wills

Christmas Delights

Performances
It was a real pleasure to see so many of you for our Christmas plays in the village hall. The children were amazing as always and I am sure you will agree that we have quite a few very accomplished performers in school. Standing on a stage in front of lots of people can be scary and exhilarating in equal measure, it creates a sense of occasion, and it is a very valuable experience for the children to have. What a group of confident children we have in our school!

Staffing
At the end of term, we say farewell to Mrs Chasey. She will be missed by children and staff but we do understand that she needs more time to complete her house build. We will say goodbye with a special assembly on Friday morning and happy wishes for the future. In January, we welcome Mrs Louise Westacott, our new Canute class teacher, who will share the week with Mrs Fernie and be supported by Miss Taylor and Miss Talbot.

Fire station with Blisland School
On Monday, Canute class visited Polruan Firestation to find out more about the fire service and how fire engines work. This was another opportunity for the children to get together with Kensa Class from Blisland and reciprocate the visit Canute made to Blisland a few weeks ago. The children enjoyed showing the visitors around school and happily shared their space and resources for the reminder of the day.

Printing with Ellie Russell Hsieh
Tuesday was a special day for Tregeagle class as they hosted a visit from local print maker, Ellie Russell Hsieh organised by Mrs Phillips. The children spent a fantastic day learning about mono and block printing and have produced some beautiful prints inspired by their PE themed dance – “The Little Matchstick Girl” - Thank you to Ellie for sharing her expertise, passion and insight.

Snow!
Unexpectedly, we found the school covered in snow on Thursday - much to the delight of the children. For those children who were able to join us for the morning, it was a cold but fun start to the day with lots of rolling around, making snow angels and sliding across the playground. Good job we have lots of spare clothes and warm radiators.

Time 2 Move - Keeping active over Christmas
The Time2Move Holiday Programme for Christmas 2023 is now live. The programme offers fun physical activities, games and wider activities plus a funded meal for every child. All children are welcome to attend, and it is completely funded for children that are eligible for benefits-related Free School Meals. Helicopter, sailing and dodgeball

It has been another fantastic week of learning, experiences and exploration. Despite us heading towards the darker months of the year, the children’s enthusiasm for learning is showing no signs of dampening. Both classes have this week completed an extended piece of writing using their learning from our wider curriculum subjects. It is fantastic to read how the children are able to apply the knowledge learnt in geography, history and science to their writing, it is clear to see the enjoyment of learning in their work.

Awe and wonder were on the agenda Thursday. One of our village residents was arriving back from a trip in a helicopter, challenging to find a flat piece of land in our hilltop village, thankfully we were able to provide just that. We all walked to the field to watch the helicopter land and the pilot kindly shut the engines down so the children could go up close and explore the helicopter. What an experience this was! Huge Thank You to Christine and her husband for letting us be part of this, a memory to be treasured.

Alexis, Tegan, Ailla, Jakson, Toby and Liam represented the school in the Bridge trust Dodgeball tournament on Thursday afternoon at Callywith College in Bodmin. They have had only a few opportunities to practice, however armed with their usual determination, bravery and resilience they played brilliantly and finished 3rd out of all the 14 schools in the trust – what an achievement! We are all super proud of them.

Friday morning, we had a visit from Morwagh Sailing project to deliver assembly workshops for the whole school. It was very interesting to learn about sailing boats and finding out about the weather, currents and the seabed in our locality.

As we head towards December, there are a number of events happening. Our Christmas Nativity and Play is in the Village Hall on Thursday 14th December in the afternoon, singing around the tree on the Wharf is Monday 18th December in the afternoon. For further details and timings, please contact Mrs Hughes in the office.

Achievement Assembly
Writers of the Week
Liam for approaching improvements and editing with a positive attitude which makes the quality of his writing greater.
Emmie for some fantastic sentences for history.
Stars of the Week
Lily-May and Rylie for a successful first week at our school.
Ava for her curiosity in learning another language - Makaton.

Enjoy the photos

Have a lovely weekend,

Friday 24th November

Canute Class have had a super week , getting out and about in Polruan. On Tuesday, we had great fun scavenging for natural materials to build a stable for baby Jesus to be born in as part of our learning about the nativity story in RE. Later in the week, we had a once in a lifetime opportunity to watch a helicopter arrive and then explore it and ask the pilot questions! This had everyone very excited, including the adults!

Back in the classroom, we are continuing to develop our knowledge of the events of the Great Fire of London and have been focusing this week on how the fire started and the reasons why it spread so far and so fast. The children have been fascinated to learn about the differences between fire fighting in 1666 and modern day approaches and are really looking forward to their visit to the Fire Station next week.

We are so proud of the children's hard work in their English lessons, which has resulted in some super stories about a lion visiting London. Now we are going to become London rats and learn how to write a diary about our experiences in the Great Fire. Year R are finalising their chocolate cake recipes and we're looking forward to seeing how their cakes turn out!

In Maths, Year R have been having a lot of fun finding 1 more and 1 less through songs and hands-on activities. Here are some links to a couple of great songs that support children's understanding of this concept, if you'd like to join in at home:
Five Currant Buns song - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mi79hRcSXI
5 Little Men in a Flying Saucer song - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_1-TrP9jwA
Year 1 have been learning how to use the strategy of counting back on a number line to help them complete subtraction calculations and Year 2 are developing their understanding of how to subtract across a tens number.

We continue to be very proud of the children's wonderfully enthusiastic attitude towards learning, despite several members of the class having been unwell. We hope you all have a chance to rest and recuperate this weekend, ready for a thrilling day on Monday when we visit the Fire Station and meet our friends from Kensa Class at Blissland Primary Academy again.

Best wishes

Mrs Chasey, Mrs Fernie, Miss Taylor & Miss Talbot

Dear Parents,
Welcome to another edition of our school blog, where we share the exciting happenings within the walls of Canute Class. It has been a week filled with exploration, creativity, and learning, despite facing some challenges.

History:
Despite a few setbacks due to illnesses, our resilient students have been thoroughly engaged in discovering the wonders of the past. The classrooms have been buzzing with excitement as the children dove into the captivating history of the Great Fire of London. Through interactive lessons and hands-on activities, our young learners have gained a deeper understanding of this significant historical event.

Maths:
In the realm of mathematics, our Year 1 students have been exploring addition and subtraction fact families. Meanwhile, our Year 2 students have been taking on the challenge of adding 2-digit numbers and mastering the art of bridging 10. The foundations for future mathematical prowess are being laid, and we are incredibly proud of their progress. Reception class has been busy too, mastering the skill of subitizing numbers up to 5, laying the groundwork for mathematical fluency in their early years.

English:
In the world of English, the creative pens of our students have been at work. The delightful stories inspired by "The Lion Who Went to Paris" have taken shape, with the children not only writing but also carefully editing their narratives. It's heartening to see their literary talents blossoming.

Design Technology and Imaginative Play:
Our budding engineers and designers have been hard at work in Design Technology class, where they explored the mechanics of making fire engines. The children learned about chassis, axels, and wheels, putting their imaginations to the test as they crafted their own miniature fire engines. The classroom was alive with the hum of creativity and the joy of hands-on learning.

The Magic of Storytime:
In the midst of our academic pursuits, we've continued to foster a love for reading through captivating stories. The joy on the faces of the children as they immerse themselves in tales of adventure and discovery is truly heartwarming. Storytime remains a cherished part of our daily routine, connecting us through the magic of literature.

Introducing the Nativity Play:
In the spirit of the upcoming festive season, we are thrilled to announce the introduction of the Nativity Play. Your little stars will be bringing the story to life, and we encourage you to support them in learning their lines at home. The magic of the Nativity Play lies not just in the performance but in the joy of sharing this timeless tale together.

Wishing You a Lovely Weekend:
As the week draws to a close, we want to extend our warmest wishes for a lovely weekend. Take this time to relax, recharge, and perhaps spend some moments with your child rehearsing those Nativity Play lines. Your support at home is invaluable, and we appreciate your partnership in making these experiences meaningful for our students. Just a reminder please keep sending in your recycling for out junk modelling fire engines. Thank you for entrusting us with the education and growth of your children. We look forward to the weeks ahead, filled with more exploration, learning, and festive cheer.

Warm regards,
Mrs Fernie, Mrs Chasey, Miss Taylor & Miss Talbot

Week 10

Writing
We have completed our sentence stacking lessons learning how to apply specific grammar aspects to write sentences so next week we are ready to plan and start writing our non-chronological reports. As we have now spent 3 weeks learning about natural disasters and volcanoes in particular, the children are full to the brim with knowledge and keen to write. We have experimented with the movement of tectonic plates to understand how these cause volcanos and earthquakes – amazing what red icing sugar and a polystyrene cup can do to help this process. I am certain I will learn some interesting aspects about how volcanos are formed, how they erupt and where in the world they are situated.
PE
We continue learning new skills in our boxing sessions and the workout is tough, but despite the challenges the children absolutely love Thursday afternoons. This wekk we have also squeezed in some Dodgeball practice in preparation for next week's tournament at Callywith College. Where we get the opportunity to compete against children from other Bridge trust schools.
Christmas play
We have started initial preparations for our play and the children will shortly have scripts printed and ready to take home to practice. Please support them to practice their lines. I will be in touch next week regarding costumes, we have plenty at school and may only need a few additional pieces.

Have a good weekend,
Mrs W

Week 9

Anti-bullying week
We have spent time this week discussing how we might call out incidents of bullying by making a noise. We finished the week with Tregeagle class presenting their ideas and experiences to the whole class in Friday’s assembly.

Children in need
The end to the week had a colourful twist with all the children arriving wearing something spotty and /or brightly coloured. At the start of the day, we talked about how fundraising can benefit communities both financially and socially. Locally, we are now benefiting from the re-launch of our Friends of Polruan Academy (FOPA) thanks to an initiative by Mrs Hughes and supported by parents. It will be great to yet again be able to raise money for those extra things to enhance the learning experiences for all the children at our school.

Achievement Assembly

Reader of the Week
Erin for her enthusiasm about reading and modelling super inference skills to explain her understanding of a text.
Indi for some super sounding out and resilience to keep trying.

Star of Week
Toby for his positive attitude to learning and being a kind, respectful member of our class.
Ronnie for insatiable curiosity and looking for learning and happily sharing with peers any new learning he has come across.

Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs W

Week 9

We have launched our new enquiry "What make Earth angry?" in which we will study the formation and eruptions of volcanoes and the force of earthquakes.
GEOGRAPHY:
We have studied how volcanoes are formed, learnt about the layers of the Earth and explored how tectonic plates move. We have also used locational knowledge skills to plot active volcanoes on a world map and discovered how these create the "Ring of Fire". This is proving to be a very popular enquiry with the children. They have good prior knowledge which they can bring to our discussions and they are full of curiosity about how the world works. It is going to be a brilliant run-up to Christmas with some fantastic learning.
ART
We have studied the artist Nick Rowland and will use this to create our own painting of an erupting volcano. We have started this week by sketching, evaluating and trying how to paint without paint using SeeSaw. I have added the results below.
WRITING
Year 5/6 went to Polperro for a poetry workshop with Sally Crabtree earlier in the week. They had a fantastic day with lots of inspirational activities fueling their writing. I am certain they will have some great poems to contribute to the Bridge School Poetry Project.

Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs W

Friday 10th November

We kicked off our new historical enquiry into the Great Fire of London with a visit to the Pop-Up Play Village event at Blisland on Tuesday. The toys and activities were all themed around the Great Fire of London and the children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the wide range of equipment,  as well as having the chance to meet up again with Kensa Class from Blisland Primary Academy. We are hoping to arrange a visit to Polruan fire station before the end of term and we'll be inviting Kensa Class to join us. In the meantime, we have started our history unit by comparing what we already know about present day London with London in 1666, focusing on similarities and differences in terms of buildings and their construction, as well as methods of transport and clothing.

Years 1 and 2 have also been using their knowledge of modern London in their English lessons this week to help them write their own stories about a lion visiting our capital city. Meanwhile, Year R are learning how to create a instructions for making a chocolate mug cake and are really looking forward to trying out their recipes!

In Maths, Years 1 and 2 are developing their knowledge of subtraction. Number bonds for 10 (eg 6 + 4, 3 + 7, 10 + 0 etc) are key instant recall facts that the children need to master in order to become efficient mathematicians and we have been using these to help us complete subtraction calculations. Year R have been exploring making and recognising different representations of 4 and 5.

Our nativity play will be held in the village hall on Thursday 14th December at 1pm and we will start rehearsing next week. If your child has a speaking part, we will send home details shortly so that you can help them practise. We are using the same script as last year so it should be familiar to many of the children. We do hope that lots of you will be able to join us on the day.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

Wild and windy weather can make children very excited, so we have had a lively, happy week.

We have moved Outdoor Learning days to Tuesdays. This week the focus of the session was on introducing the nativity play and learning about why we perform them. The children were keen to dress up in their waterproofs and get outside. While we were out the downpour began and we got very wet but the children were full of joy, their laughter could be heard all around Polruan!

In English we have been continuing with our adventure story called 'The Lion in Paris'. The EYFS have started looking at instructions about how to make a hot chocolate mug cake and we look forward to trying these in a few weeks.

In Maths we have continued to work and improve our addition and subtraction skills having a particular focus on number bonds to 10 (putting 2 number together to make 10). Any work on this at home would be valuable. The EYFS have been learning about 2d shapes and spotting them in our environment.

We have finished our enquiry question this week looking at 'Why I am amazing' by looking and comparing our 4 nations. On Monday we will start our new enquiry 'What happened in London a long long time ago?' We look forward to launching this question with our trip on Tuesday to join the Children at Blisland School at a 'Pop Up Village' based around the great fire of London events.

We hope you have a wonderful and restful weekend.

Week 8

A whirlwind of a week.

On Tuesday, Year 5/6 went to Fowey River Academy for netball and tag rugby and the chance to play as part of a team with children from other schools. These events are important preparation for our older KS2 children so they get used to the trip across the river and being part of a much larger school community.

On Wednesday, we had a super geographical field trip to Castle an Dinas. We have been studying the hillfort and it was great to experience its location, imposing views and structure firsthand. The children explored how the fort was constructed and studied the topography of the area for further field work activities back in the classroom.

On Thursday afternoon, we had our first session of Well-Being Boxing. It was brilliant to watch the children’s engagement and participation in this, for the majority, completely new activity. I think it is fair to say they were put through their paces and by the end of the session, they were significantly less chatty! From extensive research, we know how being active benefits mental health and stimulates brain activity and we hope these sessions will support the children to discover and recognize these benefits. By incorporating lots of movement breaks throughout the day, we manage to support the children to better tackle learning activities that require focus and concentration.

Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs W
